Choosing the right stopper

Whereas in the wine industry there is a high level of standardization of bottle sizes and bottleneck diameters, a very broad range of different sizes and bottleneck diameters are used in the spirits industry.

Each brand has a bottle with specific characteristics depending on its brand image objectives.

Producers often only specify the outer dimensions of the bottle, but the bottleneck profile is extremely important to identify the key diameter and edge specifications.

In the case of small bottle series, manually produced by glassblowing, there is a large variation in the internal profile, from one bottle to the next. In these situations it is best to analyse all bottles (or as many as possible) and manual insertion of each stopper is recommended.

The internal bottleneck profile should also be analysed whenever the customer changes its bottle supplier or when the bottle producer introduces changes or uses a new mould.
When designing the TS stopper, the cork stopper must be suited to the bottleneck’s characteristics and the capsule must be large enough to allow it to be easily grasped and removed by the customer to enable easy opening.

For very small stoppers, lateral grooves can be added to facilitate opening the bottle without damaging the stopper.
