Amorim Top Series stoppers can sequester up to 148 g of CO2 per stopper
Studies conducted by EY show how cork closures are helping decarbonize the spirits sector
Through its firm commitment to sustainability, corroborated by rigorous independent carbon footprint studies, Amorim Top Series is increasingly valued by the world’s leading spirits producers as a trusted partner for attaining rigorous CO2 targets.
Spirits producers have set ambitious sustainability and CO2 targets for the critical decade to 2030, in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The global food and beverages sector is one of the principal sources of the world’s carbon emissions, and carbon labels are expected to become commonplace in the wine and spirits business.
The spirits sector urgently needs to find solutions to reduce its CO2 levels and offset the high carbon footprint associated to its production, transportation and packaging processes.
Producers are looking for reliable, scientifically confirmed data to reduce their carbon footprint, which will enable them to commercialize low-carbon, or even carbon-negative, spirits.
Amorim Top Series’ high-quality capsulated stoppers have an independently calculated negative carbon balance, offering results and detailed information that places the company well ahead of its competitors in terms of the depth, breadth and credibility of scientific research into the environmental and CO2 performance of its products.
Spirits producers can thereby mitigate the carbon emissions from other vectors of their value chain, such as glass bottles.
ATS’s dedication to this topic occurs against Corticeira Amorim’s broader commitment to Sustainability, as the only Portuguese company taking part in the 50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders campaign, organized by the TBD Media Group.
Cork has excellent sustainability credentials since cork forests constitute vital biodiversity hotspots, cork is harvested without damaging the tree, 100% of all cork extracted is used and cork is 100% sustainable, recyclable and renewable.
These factors play a key role in ensuring ATS stoppers’ significant negative carbon balance. The results are further leveraged by ATS’s innovative stoppers - such as the natural cork stopper with a wooden capsule and the 100%‐natural bar top stopper, made from new bio-based polymers that are exclusively derived from renewable and/or biodegradable sources and are 100% sustainable, bio-degradable and compostable.
“Consumers are more aware than ever of the urgent need to decarbonize the products we consume,” states Hugo Mesquita, sales & marketing director at ATS. “The world’s main spirits players, as well as craft producers, are making a tremendous commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. We are delighted that these independent studies have demonstrated that our products can make big contribution to this goal. We are living in a key moment where every little step in the fight against global warming matters”.
Amorim Top Series is convinced that its major R&D+i commitment - which enables it to produce elegantly designed stoppers that deliver superior technical performance - will also increasingly reinforce the company’s position as a trusted partner for global spirits producers in attaining their rigorous CO2 goals.
A series of recent studies conducted independently by EY provide important data on the levels of carbon sequestration of different Amorim Top Series stoppers, when considering the carbon sequestration of cork oak forests and emissions associated with production of the product:
Top Series natural cork stopper with a wooden capsule, for spirits: up to -96g CO2eq;
Top Series neutrotop stopper with wooden capsule for spirits: up to -148g CO2eq;
Top Series natural cork stopper with a plastic capsule for spirits: up to -87g CO2eq; and
Top Series neutrotop stopper with plastic capsule for spirits: up to -138g CO2eq.
All of these stoppers have a negative carbon balance, when considering the carbon sequestration of cork oak forests and emissions associated with production of the product.
Conducted between 2018 and 2020, the studies conducted by EY focused on the different stages of the stoppers’ life cycle, using a cradle-to-gate approach, in particular: forestry activities; cork preparation, including transportation from the forest; production; finishing and packaging. In order to ensure comparability with the methodology used in previous studies, the distribution of the product from Portugal to the United Kingdom was also included. The assessment also included additional information on the carbon sequestration of the cork oak forest.
The research methodology was based on the ISO 14040/44 (ISO, 2006) standards, complemented with the guidelines of the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) Handbook - General Guide for Life Cycle Assessment - Detailed guidance (EC- JRC, 2010), and was also aligned with the Product Environmental Category Rules (PEFCR) for still and sparkling wines, issued by the European Commission in 2018. Production data was provided by Corticeira Amorim, while the general production processes associated to the production of raw materials, energy, transport and waste management were obtained from the ecoinvent 3.5 database (Werner, et al., 2016). The evaluation focused on a functional unit of 1000 stoppers.
